- Is it necessary for a school to make registration of Category C subjects on behalf of the S6 students?
- Students wishing to take the Category C subject examinations should register in the language examinations run by the stipulated organisations according to their learning progress and the schedule of the respective language examinations. Schools and / or students should contact the respective organisations for more details about the registration procedures.
- Students also need to register in the HKDSE in order for their Other Languages (OL) examination results to be included in the HKDSE. They should register as school candidates.
- Any persons wishing to register in the HKDSE as private candidates must note and meet the stipulated requirements for private candidates (HKDSE Examination Regulations 4.1 (a)-(c)).
- A person can only register in the HKDSE of a particular year as either school candidate or private candidate for all the subjects taken.
- Candidates have the choice of taking the OL examinations only but not to include them in the HKDSE results. These candidates can present their OL results in their ‘Student Learning Profile’ or as ‘Other Learning Experience’.
- If candidates are not satisfied with their Other Languages examination results and decide to take it again but enroll on a voluntary basis outside of school, will the results be counted too?
- Candidates can take the language examinations more than once. If candidates register in the HKDSE as school candidates in S6, they have to inform their school about taking the Category C subjects when they register. The HKEAA will report the highest level and results (above the minimum level required) the candidates attain in the Other Languages examinations taken within two years preceding the year that candidates sit the HKDSE. If they fail to get the minimum level required, their results will not be reported on the HKDSE certificate.
- If students have taken the Category C examination in S4, but then they need to repeat S4 or S5, will their Category C examination results still be valid for reporting on the HKDSE certificate?
- For a language examination especially a second language, it is important for the HKDSE to report the latest language proficiency achieved by the candidates. It is appropriate to set a validity limit for the Other Languages examination results obtained from the organisation for the purpose of including them in the HKDSE.
- The HKDSE accepts results obtained in the language examinations taken within two years preceding the year that the candidate sits the HKDSE. For example, if a candidate sits the 2025 HKDSE, the results obtained from the Other Languages examinations taken in 2023 and 2024 will be accepted.
- Is it possible for a student to take the Other Languages examinations in S5, not in S6?
- Yes. The HKEAA accepts examination results obtained from the Other Languages examinations taken within two years preceding the year that the candidate sits the HKDSE. (Also see Q.3)
- Can candidates submit the results of two languages, such as Korean and Japanese, for Category C subjects?
- Yes. Candidates can enroll in more than one Category C subject. However, it should be noted that candidates can enter a maximum of eight subjects in Categories A, B and C of the HKDSE (See HKDSE Examination Regulations 2.8) in the same year.
- Some people say that the quota for the JLPT examinations has a limit. How can I make sure that there are enough places for the students to take the examinations?
- Some persons claimed that they were not able to register for the 2021 JLPT because of limited places. It should be noted that this happened in 2021; and 2021 was an exceptional year when the JLPT was sat by two cohorts of candidates (2020 and 2021 JLPT) due to the cancellation of examination in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, as the JLPT is being held as scheduled, the situation has resumed to normal.
- Students who wish to take the JLPT need to register at the institution that provides the test. If students have any questions about examination registration, they should contact the Hong Kong Japanese Language Education Research Association (Tel: 2866 9991; Email: jlpt-info@japanese-edu.org.hk) for enquiries.
