About PIRLS 2026
Introduction

The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) assesses fourth grade students' reading literacy skills and analyses and compares students' performance in relation to information about the reading behaviour of students and the attitudes of students, teachers, schools and parents towards reading literary gathered through surveys in 40-60 countries and regions worldwide. Hong Kong has consistently been ranking among the global top three since PIRLS 2006.

PIRLS is organised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and provides internationally comparative data on how well children read by assessing their reading achievements and offers policy-relevant information for improving the teaching and learning of reading literacy skills.

The research team of the Centre for Global Assessment and Learning of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (CGAL, HKEAA) was commissioned by the Education Bureau of the Government of Hong Kong SAR to be responsible for conducting the PIRLS 2026 project in Hong Kong. HKEAA will collaborate with the EdDataX Research Centre, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct this project.
