Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA)

Since 2001, the HKEAA and the Education Bureau (EDB) jointly conducted the Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA) [formerly known as Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT)], which assesses candidates’ proficiency in English Language and Putonghua for teaching the respective subject in schools. Anyone who satisfies the entry requirements can enter for the assessment. The assessment consists of oral and written papers, as well as a classroom language assessment which is offered to teachers only.

The EDB has announced the enhanced Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) for Teachers of English / Putonghua in March 2024. For the specific requirements, please refer to the relevant EDB webpage (http://www.edb.gov.hk/lpr). Under the new arrangements, the written and speaking assessments of the LPA jointly conducted by the HKEAA and the EDB ceased to be offered from 2024/25. The Classroom Language Assessment (CLA) conducted by the EDB has been continued, and its application details are on the EDB website (http://www.edb.gov.hk/cla).
