2021 HKDSE Contingency Measures and Examination Registration

Considering the impact of prolonged class suspension on the learning and teaching for the student cohort sitting the 2021 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE), the Public Examinations Board has approved a number of one-off contingency measures, including the streamlining of assessment frameworks for the 2021 HKDSE. The written examinations of Category A subjects will take place between 23 April and 17 May next year and the examination timetable is also compressed to cope with the unpredictable development of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Results of HKDSE Predicted Level Study

The HKEAA has recently completed the Predicted Level Study of the 2020 HKDSE. The study shows that there are still some limitations in predicting candidates’ HKDSE results based on their school internal assessment marks.

This year, a total of 377 schools had submitted internal assessment marks of about 36,900 students for the study. In the future, we will conduct the study annually with a view to collecting more data to improve statistical models, and providing more useful feedback to schools.

The predicted levels achieved for the four core subjects are basically accurate, with 95% of the predicted levels within one-level deviation from HKDSE actual levels. The outcome of English Language is more accurate with the predicted levels of 71% of candidates matching their actual HKDSE levels. The corresponding matching percentages for Chinese Language, Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies are around 55%. However, the predicted levels for elective subjects are less accurate due to the smaller candidatures, fewer entries by schools in those subjects, the variations in school’s HKDSE results over the years, etc. Read the press release for details.

Documentary Video: 2020 An Unusual HKDSE

Delivering the 2020 HKDSE amid the COVID-19 pandemic was a daunting task for the HKEAA and the school community. Not only the written examinations were postponed, some examinations were also cancelled this year. A 10-minute video, entitled 2020 An Unusual HKDSE, has been made documenting the contingency arrangements made to address the public health threats, and the efforts taken by candidates, teachers, schools and examination personnel to ensure safety and fairness.

Over 800 parents joined HKDSE online seminar

With a view to limiting the spread of the COVID-19, the HKEAA has moved its annual parent information seminar online. Addressing more than 800 participants, Dr So Kwok-sang, the Secretary General of the HKEAA, said that with the right and updated information about the HKDSE, parents would find it easier to give support to their children for their studies.

During the two-hour seminar held on 29 August, panel speakers provided information and answered various questions on administration of public examinations, marking and grading, various quality control mechanisms and the latest development of the HKDSE. View highlights of the event online.
