Updates on CSTD Modern Jazz Examinations - 2024

 

As announced earlier, the syllabus transition from Modern Jazz Examinations to the Revised Modern Jazz Examinations will be taken place gradually between 2024 and 2027. Starting from 2024, the original Modern Jazz Pre Jazz, Modern Jazz Junior Jazz and Modern Jazz Grade One examinations will be no longer available. Candidates taking examinations in these grades should use the new syllabus – Revised Modern Jazz. Teachers are recommended to obtain a set of the syllabus with details from Hong Kong Dance Federation (HKDF).

 

Introduction
The Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) Examinations are offered through the Hong Kong Dance Federation in Hong Kong and the HKEAA is appointed to administer the examinations in Hong Kong.

 

 

Examination Schedule
The CSTD Examinations are held twice a year.

Applicants may indicate the preference on the date(s) of examination at the time of online registration. Please specify three dates in order of the preference (First Option, Second Option, Third Option).

Preferences submitted during online registration is for reference only. All the examination dates will be allocated in a first come, first served basis. Examination date(s) will be allocated at any time within the examination period subject to the availability of the CSTD examiners. There is no guarantee that the choice will be met. No special request on specific examination date and time will be entertained.

Applicants must:

  • forewarn parents and candidates that the examinations may require release from school or other activities.
  • forewarn parents and candidates that the date(s) within the examination period should be reserved to avoid clashing with other activities. 
  • forewarn parents and candidates that there is no guarantee to meet their examination date(s) preference.  The CSTD reserves the right to allocate another examination date and time without prior notice.

The examination period may be extended due to the availability of the examiner and the total number of candidates entering for the examination session.  The HKEAA will inform the applicants by email and announce it on HKEAA website if the examination period is revised.

 

 

Examination Registration
Only holders of CSTD Teacher's Certificate / Diploma or Eligible Teaching Certificates may enter candidates for the examinations. No private candidates are allowed to enter themselves.

The HKEAA will email registration documents to all eligible CSTD teachers before the registration starts.

The teachers/schools should register online at online.hkeaa.edu.hk. Separate applications should be submitted for candidates for general grade / major grade examinations and those who will be examined at different venues or on different examination dates. The registration will not be processed if the payment is not completed via online. From 2022 and onwards, the payment should be paid online. No cheque payment will be accepted.

The documents required for online registration are:

  • Eligible CSTD membership card (2024 onwards)
  • Eligible HKDF membership card (2024 onwards)
  • Hong Kong Identity Card / Birth Certificate / Passport of each candidate each of the candidate (for verification purposes only; will be destroyed after the registration period).
  • Candidates’ mark report or certificate of previous level (for candidates of SUBEL, ELEM, INT, ADV, CON2 5, MJ4-8, RMJ4-9, TPA4-8 , IGB, AS, AB, AG, AGB, GS, GC, T/6 9 or T/GC only)
  • Mentor’s approval form, mentor’s working sheet and the CSTD Eligible Teaching Certificate (ETC) or Examination Training Accreditation (ETA) of appropriate levels (for candidates of Teacher’s Certificate (TC) or Teacher’s Diploma (TD) only)

All supplementary documents must be submitted within the registration period. Applicants could upload the scanned copies online or submit the printed copies to HKEAA by mail / in person. For mail submission, the submission date is based on the postmark date and it must be 23 September 2024 or before. Please submit supplementary documents early to avoid postal delay and ensure that sufficient postage is paid to avoid unsuccessful delivery. Sender will bear any consequences arising from not paying sufficient postage. Entries with missing or invalid supplementary document(s) will be considered as incomplete entries and will not be handled. A supplementary fee will be charged if any missing document is submitted after the registration deadline under special circumstances.

Not submitted or unpaid registration will be considered as incomplete entry and will not be handled.

Candidates who fail to attend the examination at the appointed time will forfeit their paid examination fees and other fees. If a candidate is absent from the examination because of illness, applicant should apply for half refund of examination fee after the deadline of rescheduling application. The application can be made in writing within two weeks from the date of examination upon presentation of original medical certificate covering the examination date. The medical certificate must be issued by a registered doctor before or on the examination day and must be submitted to HKEAA by registered post or in person. No application will be accepted after the deadline.

 

Examination Fees

For details of examination fees, please refer to the document of 'Examination Fee, Surcharge and Requirements for Examination'.

Under no circumstances will the paid examination fees be refunded, transferred or retained for another examination or any other purposes.

 

Examination Venue

i.  Hong Kong Dance Federation (for General Grades)

  • Examinations could be scheduled from Mondays to Fridays only.
  • A surcharge will be levied on top of the examination fees.
  • It will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.

ii.  Other Studios (for General Grades)

  • Examinations could be scheduled from Mondays to Sundays. At least a half-day schedule, i.e. examinations of 3 hours should be fulfilled.
  • The daily examination schedules should be arranged to one that the examiners do no have to sit for more than 7.5 hours of the examination in a day, i.e. the schedules should be set from 9:00am to 12:30pm and 1:00pm to 5:30pm with a 30-minute lunch break; and a 15-minute tea break in each of the morning and afternoon session.
  • Teachers should arrange for their own examination CD and music operator. The official examination CDs can be obtained from the HKDF. Only original CD should be used during examination Teachers or music operators must stay at the front/back of the examination room and not face the candidates during the examination.
  • Original syllabus should be placed on the examiner’s table for their reference during the examinations.
  • Teachers should pick up examiners at the Hotel (To be informed by HKDF). Messages for pick up time should be left to the examiners no later than 9:00 pm the night before the examination. Teachers should accompany the examiners to the examination studio. Transportation for the examiners must be provided without cost to the CSTD or the HKEAA.
  • Examination studio must be approved by HKDF in prior.

iii.  Major Grades Examination

  • The examination date and examination venue(s) of Major Grades (Modern Jazz Grades 6 to 8, Revised Modern Jazz Grades 6 to 9, Theatrical & Performing Arts 7 to 8, Contemporary levels, Major grades in Tapping, New Tapping and Ballet) would be assigned by the HKDF.

Examination Syllabus

Applicants should obtain a set of the CSTD Examination Syllabus with details on the examination conditions, examination requirements, official uniform and age requirements etc, from the Hong Kong Dance Federation. Applicants have responsibility to confirm the eligibility of the candidates for entering examination.

Modern Jazz examinations (MJ) will be transitioned into the Revised Modern Jazz examinations (RMJ) in the coming years:

Admission Form

Admission forms are available for applicants to download at HKEAA portal account at least 14 days before the start of the examination session by following this guidelines.  Admission forms should be downloaded within the scheduled period. No reissue of admission forms will be accepted after the deadline.

Candidates should attend the examination according to the date, time and venue stated on the admission forms. Applicants and candidates should read the ‘Important Notes to Candidates’ attached to admission forms before the examination.

No alteration to the subject or grade of the examination is allowed once registration is submitted. If, under special circumstances, applicants wish to apply for changing the subject or grade of examination, the application must be submitted to HKEAA via email no later than 5:30pm on 15 November 2024. A supplementary fee of HK$331 per candidate will be charged. No change of subject or grade will be accepted after the deadline. Candidates must continue the scheduled examination as printed on the admission form even if the wrong subject or grade is registered.

No alteration to the examination schedule or grouping of candidates is allowed once admission forms are issued. Applicants may apply for rescheduling for their candidate if one of these situations apply and the required proof can be provided:

  • Medical grounds
  • Clash with another public examination
  • Clash with internal school activities or examinations
  • Emigration or departure for studying aboard

Application of rescheduling with other reasons or without the required proof will not be handled. Applicants may instead submit swapping application for their candidates taking the same subject and grade.

Applications of rescheduling must be submitted to HKEAA via specific online form no later than 5:30 pm on 15 November 2024 . No application will be accepted after the deadline. Applications are reviewed based on the examiners’ work schedule and the availability of examination venues. There is no guarantee that all applications will be approved and the review result is final. Successful application will be charged at HK$362 per candidate.

No alteration to the examination schedule is allowed once admission forms are issued. Application for swapping of examination time with another candidate will normally be accepted provided that the applicants are able to find another candidate taking the same subject an d grade to swap the examination time. The application must be submitted to HKEAA via specific online form no later than 5:30pm on 15 November 2024. Swapping the examination dates / times must be applied in pairs. No application for swapping will be accepted after the deadline. Approved swapping will be charged at HK$67 per candidate.

 

 

Mark Reports and Certificates

Applicants would be informed to collect candidates' mark reports around two months after the examination. Candidates should keep mark reports in safe custody as no replacement for mark reports can be arranged.

Candidates who complete the Pre-Grade examinations would be awarded a medal issued by CSTD after the examination.

Candidates who passed the examination would be awarded a certificate issued by the CSTD. Applicants would be informed to collect them around three months after the examination.

Mark reports and certificates that are not collected from HKEAA five months from the issuing date would be returned to the Hong Kong Dance Federation (HKDF) without further notice.

 

 

Candidates' Personal Data and Correspondence

Applicants would be informed to collect candidates' mark reports around two months after the examination. Candidates should keep mark reports in safe custody as no replacement for mark reports can be arranged.

Candidates who complete the Pre-Grade examinations would be awarded a medal issued by CSTD after the examination.

Candidates who passed the examination would be awarded a certificate issued by the CSTD. Applicants would be informed to collect them around three months after the examination.

Candidates' Personal Data and Correspondence
Personal data of applicants / candidates are used by the HKEAA and CSTD (the "Examination Board") for delivery of examination and assessment services.  Whether you provide the requested personal data is voluntary. However, if you fail to provide all the data, or if any of the data are inaccurate or incomplete, the HKEAA and the Examination Board may not be able to accept your entry or provide all or part of the examination and assessment services. The personal data submitted may also be used for:
  1. assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organizations in their admission processes;
  2. assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organisations in respect of their requests for information in granting scholarships;
  3. assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organisations to confirm the candidates’ eligibility for financial assistance or other forms of subsidization, in which case, the necessary personal data of the candidates may have to be disclosed to the concerned organisations for verification;
  4. certifying candidates’ examination results in response to legitimate requests;
  5. processing any refund or payment in relation to the examination; 
  6. conducting educational research and analysis in an anonymous format in which the identities of candidates are not traceable; and
  7. marketing the services and products of the Examination Board (including examination services, courses, events, publications, and other examination materials or resources) subject to the consent of the candidates.*

The HKEAA and the Examination Board may also transfer the personal data of candidates between them and to third parties for use for the above purposes or other directly related purposes, whether in or outside Hong Kong, including government/public organisations, regulatory bodies, schools and educational institutions, banks (for processing refund or payment), and service providers/ personnel providing various administrative or technical services to facilitate the delivery of the examination and assessment services including but not limited to data punching, registration process, verification of identity, dispatch of examination documents, and the capture, disposal or other processing of data.


In compliance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, access to all personal data will be made available, on payment of a fee, to anyone who can establish his/her right to be informed of such data as are retained by the HKEAA. Please also note that candidates' personal data/correspondence/other information received by the HKEAA may be referred to the Examination Board concerned for delivery of examination and assessment services and for any of the abovementioned purposes or other directly related purposes. In general, upon completion of an examination or examination series and all the connecting examination services, the HKEAA will transfer all such data to the Examination Board who will then assume full control of such data. By then, candidates should approach the Examination Board direct for their personal data/information handling policies if necessary.

 

Neither CSTD nor the HKEAA shall be responsible for any non-performance of duties where such non-performance has been caused by an act of God, labour strike, natural disaster, governmental action or intervention, or any other cause not reasonably foreseeable and beyond the reasonable control of CSTD or the HKEAA. The HKEAA, including their contractors and subcontractors, shall not be liable to anyone claiming for any damages which are caused by, arising from or otherwise related to the failure of staff members, examination personnel or the examination centres to comply with the examination regulations, policies or procedures. All fees paid are not refundable and not transferable from one examination to another or from one candidate to another or for any other purposes.
