SBA School Coordinators and their Roles / Responsibilities
Questions:
Answers:
  1. What are the duties of an SBA school coordinator?

The SBA school coordinator should be an English Teacher who will carry out the following duties in consultation with other English teachers of the same form:

    • review the list of recommended texts
    • select suitable texts for students' SBA programme
    • select / develop suitable SBA assessment tasks
    • plan assessment schedule (i.e. number, timing and sequence of assessment tasks)
    • ensure proper understanding of the assessment criteria
    • coordinate and standardise the assessment process
    • coordinate the reporting of marks to the HKEAA at the end of S5/S6
    • coordinate the submission of videos (six sets, two high, two mid and two low performances) to the HKEAA at the end of S6
    • liaise with the HKEAA and the SBA supervisor regarding SBA matters

SBA school coordinators also need to attend an inter-school meeting on behalf of their school at the end of the school year.

  2. Is it necessary for the SBA school coordinator to be the panel chair?

Definitely not. SBA school coordinators will play a crucial role in the smooth running of the SBA programme and should be experienced teachers with professional qualifications who command the respect and confidence of their peers. They may be panel chairpersons, form coordinators or other English teachers but should be teaching S4 to S6. School principals will be responsible for nominating the SBA school coordinator for their school.

  3. Why must the SBA school coordinator be a teacher teaching that form?

It is up to the school principal to nominate the most suitable teacher in the school to be the SBA school coordinator. However, it is recommended that the school coordinators should be S5/S6 teachers because they would be responsible for coordinating the SBA activities in the school and ensuring that all teachers are familiar with the assessment criteria and standards. SBA school coordinators who do not teach S5/S6 may be less sure about the standards and will have to do extra work to carry out the coordinating duties.

  4. What do SBA school coordinators have to do at the inter-school meeting?

At this 3-hour meeting, SBA school coordinators from different schools can share experiences and expertise, review their SBA practices, and compare and standardise their assessments. One of the responsibilities of an SBA school coordinator is to coordinate the assessment process in their school, and these meetings with other school coordinators from other schools will be immensely useful, not only in getting advice on problematic assessment cases but also for professional support and sharing.
