For each student taking Biology, a teacher should carry out at least one assessment in Area A and one assessment in Area B at S5. Similarly, a student should be assessed at least once in Area A and once in Area B at S6. At least 1 assessment of Area A (practical skills) must come from investigative practical work (i.e. task type (a)). Assessments of practical skills in microscopic examination, dissection, ecology fieldwork and biological drawing are optional. Therefore, there is no minimum number of assessments required for these types of practical work.
For each student taking Combined Science (Biology part), a teacher should carry out at least one assessment in Area A and one assessment in Area B during the S5 and S6 years. Teachers are free to choose task types (a) to (e) for assessment of Area A.
Marks for Area A and Area B may or may not come from the same investigative practical work. The teacher can use the investigation for assessment of practical skills (Area A) or the report (Area B), or both areas. In cases when Area A is assessed alone, the teacher can give full instruction on the procedure. However, in investigations involving assessment of Area B, teachers can only give generic guidelines on the design of the investigation.
