Category A subjects consist of four core subjects (Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Citizenship and Social Development), and 19 elective subjects covering different learning areas such as science, humanities, information technology, etc.
Currently, School-based Assessment (SBA) is implemented in 12 Category A subjects. Private candidates are not required to complete the SBA component of the subjects concerned (except Visual Arts). Their subject marks will be calculated based on their public examination results. For Visual Arts in which the SBA component carries a weighting of 50%, they will be required to submit a portfolio in lieu of the SBA. Entries from private candidates for Design and Applied Technology are not accepted.
Standards-referenced Reporting (SRR) is adopted for Category A subjects. With the exception of Citizenship and Social Development, candidates’ performance is reported in five levels (levels 1 to 5), with 5 being the highest. The level 5 candidates with the best performance are awarded a 5**, the next top group of candidates are awarded a 5* and the remaining level 5 candidates receive simply level 5. Attainment below level 1 is designated as ‘Unclassified’. The results of Citizenship and Social Development are reported in one level, ‘Attained’. Achievements below ‘Attained’ are designated as ‘Unattained’.
