- The Hong Kong Examinations Authority Ordinance was passed on 5 May; the Authority commenced operations on 1 August

- First Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) held by the Authority
- Administered around 35 international and professional examinations for around 126,000 candidates

- First-round consultation for the New Senior Secondary curriculum and the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)

- Introduction of Standards-referenced Reporting (SRR) in HKCEE Chinese Language and English Language
- Onscreen marking (OSM) adopted for HKCEE Chinese Language and English Language scripts; establishment of three assessment centres
- Established the Public Examinations Information Centre

- OSM extended to HKCEE, HKALE, TSA and LPAT [LPAT has been renamed as ‘Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA)’ since September 2023]
- Introduction of the Public Examinations Support System (PESS), including the Public Examinations Communication and Support System, the Attendance and Script Tracking System and the Oral Recording System in public examinations

- Administrated about 200 international and professional examinations for around 300,000 candidates

- Completion of the New Academic Structure Medium-term Review in collaboration with the Education Bureau (EDB) and Curriculum Development Council (CDC)

- Delivery of the 2021 HKDSE amid COVID-19 pandemic, and for the first time at the Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre
- About 645,000 candidates sat the HKDSE over the past decade with nearly 9 million answer scripts marked

- Delivery of the 2022 HKDSE amid COVID-19 pandemic, and at the Penny’s Bay Community Isolation Facility again for candidates undergoing mandatory quarantine. The arrangement was also extended to cover candidates confirmed with COVID-19
- HKDSE recognised locally and globally: In addition to local tertiary institutions, around 130, 140 and 300 institutions from the Mainland, Taiwan and overseas respectively recognised the HKDSE
