The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Examinations
Introduction

The HKEAA administers both the General Graded Examinations and the Vocational Graded Examinations of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). The RAD examinations are the most popular classical ballet examinations in Hong Kong.

Examinations Timetable

Both the General Graded Examinations & Presentation Classes and the Vocational Graded Examinations are conducted once a year. The General Graded Examinations & Presentation Classes are held annually in around May / June while the Vocational Graded Examinations are held between August and December. The tentative examination schedule in the year 2010 is as follows:-

Entry Requirements

According to the RAD regulations, for reasons of safe dance practice, candidates must normally have achieved the minimum age listed below by the end of the examination session dates. In Hong Kong, it is at HKEAA's discretion to admit candidates who have reached the minimum age by the end of the calendar year.

For Vocational Graded Examinations, candidates should pass the Examinations in the order shown above, but need not take either Foundation examinations, as these are optional. Candidates entering for the Solo Seal Award must have achieved 75% or over in Advanced 2 examination.

Examinations Registration

Registration for the General Graded Examinations & Presentation Classes takes place in January each year while that for the Vocational Graded Examinations takes place from early May to early June. The registration schedule for the 2010 examinations is as follows:-

Candidates can ONLY be entered by Registered Teachers of the RAD. NO private candidates are allowed to enter themselves.

Every year, the HKEAA will send letters to all Registered Teachers of the RAD for the estimated number of entries to the two examinations and the required number of entry forms will be sent to them.

Teaching Programme - Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS)
Please note that the curriculum of Teaching Examinations has been changed since 2004. Application Form can be downloaded from RAD website (www.radeducation.org.uk/applycbts). Please submit the application to RAD direct.

The programme fee relates to students enrolling in January 2010. They are set annually and are retained for the two years programme. Programme fees are payable in 4 instalments over two years.

For those who are awarded the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS) are entitled to enter candidates for examinations and presentation classes of the RAD.

The Teaching Certificate Programme and the Eligibility Examination have been phased out by the Faculty of Education of RAD.

Data Privacy

Candidates' personal particulars entered on the entry forms will only be used for the purpose of conducting the examination.

Publications related to the RAD examinations are available for sale at the Publications Unit at the HKEAA San Po Kong Office.
