Pearson Test of English (PTE) Young Learners / Pearson Test of English (PTE) General

Introduction

There are 2 suites of Pearson Test of English (PTE), PTE Young Learners targets for children whilst PTE General targets for teenagers and adults. The examination will be held twice a year in May/June and November/December in Hong Kong.

# If the candidature is large, candidates for PTE Young Learners and PTE General (except PTE General Level 5) may be assigned to attend the Oral Test on 11 May 2014 (Sun). Please refer to the admission form for the exact Oral Test date.

 

* As per the examination regulations, oral tests of both PTE Young Learners and PTE General will be recorded.

The examination date and time cannot be changed, so please make yourself available on the examination dates.

For school candidates, the written tests will be invigilated by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) invigilation personnel at candidates' schools if:

 

  1. the schools could provide their venues for conducting the written tests; and
  2. there are 25 or more candidates sitting the same level from a school (if more than one schools at the same district have in total 25 or more candidates sitting the same level, arrangements could be made for the written test to be held at one of the schools).

 

For private candidates and school candidates whose schools cannot meet the above criteria, the written tests will be held at the venues assigned by the HKEAA.

 

 

Recognition

PTE General is designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning. It consists of two parts: a written test and an oral test. The written test assesses listening, reading comprehension and writing skills and is marked by external examiners in the UK. The oral test is assessed by trained local examiners and is sent to the UK for moderation.

The following levels of the PTE General are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and IELTS (extracted from http://pearsonpte.com/PTEGeneral/Pages/home.aspx and http://www.ielts.org/researchers/common_european_framework.aspx).

Target candidates

PTE General Level A1 – Foundation A1 / - For test takers with a beginner knowledge of English; sufficient for survival in social, travel and everyday situations.
PTE General Level 1 – Elementary A2 / - For test takers with a basic command of English to cope with language needs for social, travel and everyday purposes.
PTE General Level 2 – Intermediate B1 / 4.0 For test takers with intermediate English for practical use in study, work, travel and other everyday purposes.
PTE General Level 3 – Upper Intermediate B2 / 5.5 For test takers who use or will use an upper intermediate level of English for their personal, social, educational or working life.
PTE General Level 4 –Advanced C1 / 6.5 For test takers applying for higher education in an English speaking institution and/or wishing to demonstrate an advanced level in English for social, academic and vocational purposes. Level 4 is recognized for admission to a number of UK universities.
PTE General Level 5 –Proficient C2 / 7.5 For test takers applying for higher education in an English speaking institution and/or wishing to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English for social, academic and professional purposes. Level 5 is recognized for admission to a number of UK universities.

 

 

 

Examination Registration

Registration will be accepted from 17 February to 19 March 2014 (excluding Sundays & Public Holidays), candidates should submit the relevant documents to our HKEAA San Po Kong office in person or by post. No entry will be accepted after 19 March 2014. Candidates requesting special arrangements should submit a written request together with a doctor's certificate at the time of registration.

Admission forms will be sent through schools (school candidates) / by post (private candidates) in late April 2014.

Data Privacy

Personal data of candidates are used for delivery of examination services. As such, they may be provided to the Authority's designated contractors/vendors (or their appointees) for delivery of processes which is not accomplished by the Authority, inculding but not limited to data punching, receipt of candidate fees and despatch of examination documents. Whether you provide the requested personal data is voluntary. However, if you fail to provide all the data, or if any of the data are inaccurate or incomplete, the HKEAA may not be able to accept your entry. The personal data submitted may also be used for: (a) assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organisations in their processes for admissions purposes; (b) assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organisations in respect of their requests for information in granting scholarships; (c) assisting tertiary institutions and other government/public organisations to confirm the candidates' eligibility for financial assistance or other forms of subsidization, in which case, the necessary personal data of the candidates may have to be disclosed to the concerned organisations for verifications; (d) certifying candidates’ examination results in response to legitimate requests; (e) conducting educational research and analysis in an anonymous format in which the identities of candidates are not traceable; and (f) marketing the services and products of the Examination Board.

In compliance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, access to all personal data will be made available, on payment of a fee, to anyone who can establish his/her right to be informed of such data as are retained by the HKEAA. Please also note that candidates’ personal data/correspondence/other information received by the HKEAA may be referred to the Examination Board concerned. Candidates should approach the Examination Board direct for their personal data/information handling policies if necessary.
