Pearson Test of English (PTE) Young Learners / Pearson Test of English (PTE) General
Introduction

There are 2 suites of Pearson Test of English (PTE), PTE Young Learners targets for children whilst PTE General targets for teenagers and adults.  The upcoming tests will be held in November/December 2010 in Hong Kong.

#If the candidature is large, candidates may be assigned to attend the Oral Test on Sunday, 14 Nov 2010. Please refer to the admission form for the exact Oral Test date. 

* As per the test regulations, oral tests of both PTE Young Learners and PTE General will be recorded.

For school candidates, the written tests will be invigilated by HKEAA invigilators at students' schools if:

1 the schools could provide their venues for conducting the written tests; and
2
there are 25 or more candidates sitting the same level from a school (if two schools of the same district have in total 25 or more candidates sitting the same level, arrangements could be made for the written test to be held at one of the schools).

For private candidates and school candidates whose schools cannot meet the above criteria, the written tests will be held at the venues assigned by HKEAA.

Recognition  
PTE General is designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning.  It consists of two parts: a written paper and an oral test.  The written paper tests listening, reading comprehension and writing skills and is marked by external examiners in the UK.  The oral test is assessed by trained local examiners and is sent to the UK for moderation. 

The following levels of the PTE General are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and IELTS (extracted from http://pearsonpte.com/LTE/Pages/home.aspx and http://www.ielts.org/researchers/common_european_framework.aspx:

For test takers with a basic command of English to cope with language needs for social, travel and everyday purposes.

PTE General Level 2 – Intermediate

For test takers with intermediate English for practical use in study, work, travel and other everyday purposes.

PTE General Level 3 – Upper Intermediate

B2 / 5.5

For test takers who use or will use an upper intermediate level of English for their personal, social, educational or working life.

PTE General Level 4 –Advanced

 C1 / 6.5  

For test takers applying for higher education in an English speaking institution and/or wishing to demonstrate an advanced level in English for social, academic and vocational purposes.  Level 4 is recognized for admission to a number of UK universities.   
PTE General Level 5 –Proficient

C2 / 7.5

For test takers applying for higher education in an English speaking institution and/or wishing to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English for social, academic and professional purposes.  Level 5 is recognized for admission to a number of UK universities.


Test Registration

Registration will be accepted from 13 August to 22 September 2010 (excluding Sundays & Public Holidays). No entry will be accepted after 22 September 2010. Candidates requesting special arrangements should submit a written request together with a doctor's certificate at the time of registration.

Admission forms will be sent through schools (school candidates) / by post (private candidates) in early November 2010.

Data Privacy
Personal particulars submitted for the registration of PTE General / PTE Young Learners tests will be used for the following purposes:
  1.  Conducting the examinations,
  2.  Assisting tertiary institutions in their admission processes,
  3.  Certifying candidate's examination results in response to legitimate requests,
  4.  Conducting educational research and analysis,
  5.  Sending information related to the PTE General / PTE Young Learners to the applicants.
