  • The Hong Kong Examinations Authority (HKEA) Ordinance was passed on 5 May; the Authority commenced operations on 1 August
1978
  • Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) administered for the first time
  • Administration of around 35 international and professional examinations for 126,000 candidates
1979
  • Hong Kong Higher Level Examination (HKHLE) to replace the Chinese University of Hong Kong Matriculation Examination
1980
  • Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) to replace the Advanced Level Examination of the University of Hong Kong
1981
  • Introduction of three sub-grades system in HKALE
1985
  • Unclassified replaces results below grade F in public examinations
1986
  • Listening Test for HKCEE English Language administered for the first time
1988
  • Test of Proficiency in Putonghua (TPP) administered for the first time
1990
  • Test of Advanced Proficiency in Putonghua (TAPP) administered for the first time
  • Basic Proficiency Tests (BPT) of Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics administered for the first time
  • Administration of over 150 international and professional examinations with total number of candidates increased to 244,500

  • Introduction of two sub-grades system in HKCEE
1992
  • Chinese version of question papers introduced for HKALE subjects
  • Two sub-grades system is introduced to replace the three sub-grades system in HKALE

  • Online registration services for private candidates of HKCEE and HKALE

  • Introduction of the Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) to Primary 3
  • First round consultation for the New Senior Secondary curriculum and the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination
2005
  • Confirmation of ISO 9001:2000 certification for the HKCEE and HKALE
  • TSA extended to Primary 6
2006
  • TSA extended to Secondary 3
  • Launch of SMS service for private and evening school candidates on results release
2007
  • Introduction of Standards-referenced Reporting in HKCEE Chinese Language and English Language
  • Establishment of the Pubic Examinations Information Centre
  • Establishment of three assessment centres; onscreen marking adopted for HKCEE Chinese Language and English Language scripts
  • Pilot scheme of the Quality Assessment Management Accreditation Scheme (QAMAS)
  • Provision of government recruitment examination services
2008
  • Last Test of Advanced Proficiency in Putonghua
  • Confirmation of ISO 9001:2000 certification for the development and provision of assessment services of BCA
  • Confirmation of ISO 9001:2000 certification for the administration of all international & professional examinations
2009
  • Publication of HKDSE Standards-referenced Reporting Information Packages
2010
  • Last HKCEE for school candidates
  • Agreement with the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) on tariffs for HKDSE Category A subjects
  • Expansion of QAMAS by opening to all primary and secondary schools
2011
  • Last HKCEE for private candidates
  • Launched HKDSE Online Services for schools and candidates
  • Launch of DSE Express blog
2012
  • Practice papers for HKDSE Category A subjects published
  • Launch of HKDSE mobile app
  • HKDSE Examination administered for the first time with 73,074 candidates entered
  • Last HKALE for school candidates
  • Administration of over 200 international and professional examinations with total number of candidates of over 310,000
2013
  • Last HKALE for priviate candidates

  • Release of results of the benchmarking study between IELTS and HKDSE English Language Examination
